#StopCopCity Mass Mobilization at Atlanta City Hall for Council Vote on June 5
ATLANTA, GA — This Monday, #StopCopCity community will return to City Hall to demand the Atlanta City Council vote No on any legislation that offers public funding for Cop City. The last mobilization, on May 15, broke historical records, with the longest in-person public comment at any City Council meeting in Atlanta history, reportedly doubling the previous record set in 2017. Community members are expected to shatter that record again on Monday.
Since May 15, the controversy around the Cop City compound has exploded, with revelations of the true public cost of the project at least doubling, potentially even tripling in the near future, along with the recent arrests of three organizers from the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, a vital bail fund that serves the entire community. From the murder of the beloved Tortuguita to the imprisonment of activists and organizers, the movement has seen the lengths the power structure in Atlanta will go to silence our opposition. June 5 will provide the opportunity for their voices to be heard as they detail many of the reasons why Cop City must never be built.
Many will be gathering well before the public comment sign-up period begins at 11 a.m. in anticipation of political maneuvering aimed to minimize dissent. A rally is planned at 12:30 p.m. outside of City Hall while others are preparing to supply enough food to feed at least 500 people. This could likely be the most-attended event in the movement’s history. Media is strongly encouraged to come to City Hall and speak directly with/interview Atlanta residents about why each one of them is opposing Cop City. Regardless of the outcome of the vote on June 5, the people of Atlanta have already made it clear that they do not consent to the construction of this facility.
Cop City will never be built!
